He knows that his own government would be just as interested in such a thing, and that a terrible war looms on the horizon. It was still an enjoyable read but barbbara quite what I’d hoped for after the first volume. But he knows he’s no match for a vampire in power, which is where Ysidro comes in, acting as muscle to his brain, intuition and logic.

The plots can be muddy – I had to read Travelling a couple of times before it really made any sense to me, and I had a little of the same problem with Maidens.
I hope we get more of these characters. They’re dark and dangerous, and on the eve of World War I, the Kaiser would very much like to enlist them as his agents. Petersburg, the Kaiser is trying to recruit vampires. Her sentences are things of beauty which create miracles of character and setting. It stands well on its own, although the previous two are highly recommended. Add to Your books. I also appreciate that this author knows her history and does an incredible job of weaving fantasy, paranormal, romance and history into one really good plot; my four favorite escape genre’s, all rolled into one.

These are not romantic heroes, their beauty and charm is a trap and even bsrbara you think you’re not being cozened and deceived, the question is still there: No, these harken back to old school vampires: I’ve proven them wrong on both counts. However, this time the trail takes them to St Petersburg, and despite the superficial similarities, the plot is sufficiently different from the previous books’ that my misgivings were soon allayed.

Particularly when it came to Lydia, who’d also gone from a likeable but slightly stereotypical Plucky Heroine to a real woman. It’s jam-packed with action, and I’ve come to love the characters now. I picked up a few wince-able errors in the Russian section, particularly in terms of how characters address one another – but then Russian name structure seems to be a blind spot for an awful lot of writers!
I love these books partly for their atmosphere; Hambly has a degree in medieval history which gives her a good grounding in research and a knack for knowing just which details to include to create the world of the early twentieth century.
