I’ve enjoyed this book by the Puritan John Flavel. I would especially recommend this book to anyone who is suffering. Just before his death he acted as moderator at a meeting of dissenting ministers held at Topsham.

He masterfully weaves in scripture to support his points and exhorts and encourages procidence in a most convicting manner!

Not only is it full of examples of the Providence of God, it is also a challenge to look at my msytery life and see His Providences there for an encouragement to both myself and others. Flavel shows how providence is not merely a random act of kindness by Tbe, sometimes noticed by us every once in a while in our lives, but that it is indeed the gracious hand of God working in every aspect of our lives effecting the perfect will of our sovereign Lord.

You will not find an argument for meticulous providence in this book, so the title is perhaps a little misleading.

I found this one to be VERY worthwhile. But the second half is absolutely marvelous in its focus on faith over fear and trust in the sovereignty of God. This book should be read slowly for maximum understanding and blessing. One who prefers quick-fix, quasi-spiritual literature will find nothing appealing in Flavel’s efforts.

Though at times you may be challenged to agree with the authors assertion that n The most encouraging and friendly book I’ve read in a long time. He also knows that many people will act contrary to God’s actions and offers helpful ways of avoiding to fall into that trap. It is also a good lesson in being thankful for the mercies of God’s providence, instead of always complaining about what isn’t the way I want it to be.
