Many of Verne’s books contain a great deal of description and science, but the most successful of his works keep the delicate balance between description and plot. Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before navigable aircraft and practical submarines were invented, and before any means of space travel had been devised. What’s more, the father is accused of a crime he never committed, and the only proof of his innocence is an encrypted document.

A few years after he passed away, I had been re-reading a few of my favourite Jules Verne novels, and I figured it was time to g I was so disappointed not to like this book. Refresh and try again. But after some pages or so the plot become much more interesting and I got totally immersed jaangada enjoyed it until the very end.

The first half of the book is just filled with description of surrounding land I quickly skimmed through because, even though his knowledge is surely admirable, all those names of rivers, plants etc.

A family and several of their friends float a giant raft downriver in preparation for a marriage. It is primarily a description of a family traveling down the Amazon River to a family wedding, and the adventures they have along the way.

Unlike his usual science fiction novels, Eight hundred leagues actually tells the tale of an Amazon River trip, and most is quite descriptive as regards the surroundings, people, places, vegetation, wildlife, etc. This raid of the Amazon is not without risk for Garral: Thanks for telling us about the problem. The first half was an endless catalogue of natural history, including but not limited to: A few become a tight group as they fight to stay alive in a world unlike they have ever seen. I was so disappointed not to like this book. The information is fascinating, and makes up a majority of the book, but the author feels that these presentations make understanding the story so much easier.

Very boring and so starting for the most part, but the cryptogram at the end livens things up a lot, and then everything happens quite fast. Quotes from Leagues on th Sinister omen, a menacing character named Torres is invited aboard the Jangada and, after an attack of alligators, the justice comes to stop Dacosta.

However, there is a nifty cryptogram if you listen to the audiobook, they read the whole cryptogram letter by letter and it’s rather long—so you might want to skip through that part, unless you have an excellent memory and attention span.

It’s true there are a few inaccuracies in his description, but the way he describes it made it come alive for me in a way that no other description of encryption ever has. As is the case with his other books Verne places much importance on the honor of life and this can be found in the personalities of the characters in the story.

Probably had the least real action of any Jules Verne book I’ve read yet, but there was enough mystery to keep me interested.
